The "Voices From Chernobyl" book really is essential reading. I tend to gravitate to history of science type stuff--did you read Armand-Marie LeRoi's "Mutants"? That was a great book. Dan Kevles's book about eugenics was also a favorite of mine, more history than science & perhaps more your cup of tea in that case?
