Very odd bit of writing -- esp. near the end every paragraph seems to begin with a jolt. "Suicide was the verdict..." "Tragedy seems..." "Valium was the drug..." "Zona Sul is the official designation..." "Ouro Preto is a town..."
The oddity struck me too - it must be that the layout in the print version did more with the disjunctions, in an online format it just seems under-edited!
I have published four novels and four books of literary criticism; I'm currently at work on a book called FOR THE LOVE OF BROKEN THINGS: MY FATHER, EDWARD GIBBON AND THE RUINS OF ROME. I teach in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
