Stuart Kelly has this rather wonderful list at the Scotsman, and I must say that with the exception of Sir Patrick Geddes, whose work I know only by repute (and in a more postcolonial-theory-type context), pretty much every other one of the books on the list really
did change my (intellectual) life! (Well, maybe not Burns. But even Burns, in a way--and definitely the others, these are books that permanently reshape the brain, in the best possible way.)
