1. This genre of memoirish criticism of an author seems to be remarkably in vogue! (Cf. the McLane...) I think I approve of the fashion, though it sometimes seems as if the personal and critical bits are a little tenuously connected.
2. I do not know how I feel about these Dickens lists. I understand why people prefer Bleak House to the early novels, but I wish someone would sometimes stand up for Pickwick!
