Paddington Bear was my second best stuffed animal friend as a child (Rowlf will always have first claim on my heart) and under the influence of his literary adventures, I cultivated a love of marmalade which endures into my thirties. As does my love of the sound of Peru (the actual word) which comes from the same source.
I have published four novels and four books of literary criticism; I'm currently at work on a book called FOR THE LOVE OF BROKEN THINGS: MY FATHER, EDWARD GIBBON AND THE RUINS OF ROME. I teach in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.

ReplyDeleteMy appreciation of Gilbert & Sullivan is all from Rowlf.
