The children and the fruit tree

Earliest known work by JMD! Not sure whether I was three or four when I dictated this story to my mother, but certainly I was already in thrall to the absurd notion that the only thing really worth doing with one's time was writing a book....

  1. That is beyond adorable! And now makes me want to frolic amongst fruit trees..

  2. An early experiment combining the conventions of crime fiction with fantastical elements. My mother says on basis of painting style and various other details that this was from the winter I was three - the stationery was a frugal remnant of our time in London, the actual site of composition was suburban Wilmington, Delaware!

  3. I think it's safe to say I'm officially in love! Seriously though this brought a huge smile to my face. When I was little, I had a fascination with fruit and fruit trees. So much so that I'd tie candy from the branches of the lime and peach trees in our backyard when they weren't bearing fruit!

  4. (And, of course, I'd have to put new candy up every day since every night, the possums would swipe all the gummi bears and things I'd strung up.)
