I have published four novels and four books of literary criticism; I'm currently at work on a book called FOR THE LOVE OF BROKEN THINGS: MY FATHER, EDWARD GIBBON AND THE RUINS OF ROME. I teach in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
Very fun. I like the Lyrical Ballads move at the end.
ReplyDeleteI just Googled Montagu's poem. Very good! What an ending. I'd thought she was friends with Pope at one point. (?)
ReplyDeleteI love Verses on The Death of Dr. Swift. What about the earlier draft? With the more pedestrian but somehow catchier translation of Rouchefoucauld?
