Great expectations

An interesting post at the always worthwhile Electric Alphabet blog about HarperCollins UK's Authonomy site, a networking experiment for authors that seems to be showing some of the tensions between corporate marketing strategies and the dynamics of online communities.

  1. Jenny, I joined Authonomy early on for one and only one reason: to bring my fiction to a few other readers' attention. From the outset I had no interest in their so-called business model - and made it clear that I wasn’t after any sort of conventional publishing. With 50-100 downloads of my Mortal Ghost per day, plus many more of the podcasts, why should I be?

I feel rather sorry for those writers who were hoping desperately to ‘make it’ in this way. Better they concentrate on what writing is all about, not publishing.
