Hi Jenny, if you're looking for good swim lit you simply MUST read "Alex" by New Zealand author Tessa Duder. It's an excellent YA novel about a teenager, Alex Archer, who trains for selection for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. I read it as a teenager and still remember it fondly. It's excellent, as were the sequels that followed.
It's possibly out of print now, as it was originally published in the early 1990s, but you can find lots of good-condition copies at AbeBooks. I believe the US edition was titled "In Lane Three, Alex Archer." The UK edition was simply "Alex." Highly recommended.
I have published four novels and four books of literary criticism; I'm currently at work on a book called FOR THE LOVE OF BROKEN THINGS: MY FATHER, EDWARD GIBBON AND THE RUINS OF ROME. I teach in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
You definitely do!

P.S. I simply adored The Explosionist. When can we expect The Snow Queen?
