Have you read any of Denise Hamilton's books, Jenny? They are absolutely my cup of tea, a great juxtaposition of most of my favourite features -- female heroine, journalist, LA, political corruption, sex-related crimes, rackets, racism-- etc. Denise is an incredibly nice person I think -- I discovered her books through a book club over here but when I used to be on Dorothy L mail list, she posted on that sometimes and was very kind in a couple of emails we exchanged.
Irrespective of all that, I think you'd like her books -- of course I can't remember what they are all called === was the first one the Jasmine Trade? Great plot concept. One was called Sugar Skull, and I think she has a new one out around now.
I have published four novels and four books of literary criticism; I'm currently at work on a book called FOR THE LOVE OF BROKEN THINGS: MY FATHER, EDWARD GIBBON AND THE RUINS OF ROME. I teach in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
