During your undergrad years, did you experience a falling away of passion in the pursuit of good grades (.i.e.: not writing a paper how you wanted to write it, but simply surrendering to what you felt would get you the highest grade)?
Funny question! But actually--though I can't say I recommend this--no, I was unbelievably negligent of good grades, I only did the work I found interesting, did that work quite passionately and obsessively but completely ignored the boring stuff/bad classes and indeed have a much patchier transcript than you might expect.
I have published four novels and four books of literary criticism; I'm currently at work on a book called FOR THE LOVE OF BROKEN THINGS: MY FATHER, EDWARD GIBBON AND THE RUINS OF ROME. I teach in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
