that I hadn't done for a long time (in fact possibly not since 1990 or so, is that even minimally credible?) is write a short story, and here it is. Fun!
Yes to that ending! (And BTW - sorry, too lazy to scroll back to the last poetry post - I read prose the same way as you do poetry - rolling it round my mouth like a full-bodied Sauvignon Cabernet.)
you fiend! marvellous! the first book you mentioned had me go 'hey waittaminit!', because i've been waiting and waiting for it, too. got to tell neil g. about this, heh. :-) marrije
So... don't take this the wrong way, but I think the only writer I can I know of that writes better blogs, posts, unedited quickly dasted off comments on here, better than you actually write "prose" for your short stories, articles, and books.
I often feel this is the same way for myself. The thing you produce is somehow less alive when overworked.
I have published four novels and four books of literary criticism; I'm currently at work on a book called FOR THE LOVE OF BROKEN THINGS: MY FATHER, EDWARD GIBBON AND THE RUINS OF ROME. I teach in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
