I am not going to say anything one way or the other, except to make two observations: (1) often I link to a piece without comment when my comment would be disapproving and (2) the two of shriver's novels that i've actually read are both spectacularly good, don't be put off. she makes a specialty of the offputting female main character, which is surprisingly rare in contemporary fiction!
I have published four novels and four books of literary criticism; I'm currently at work on a book called FOR THE LOVE OF BROKEN THINGS: MY FATHER, EDWARD GIBBON AND THE RUINS OF ROME. I teach in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
Good for her. Complete crative control.

I disagree. Smug, whiny, and unprofessional. It's put me off her books.
