  2. I disagree. Smug, whiny, and unprofessional. It's put me off her books.

I am not going to say anything one way or the other, except to make two observations: (1) often I link to a piece without comment when my comment would be disapproving and (2) the two of shriver's novels that i've actually read are both spectacularly good, don't be put off. she makes a specialty of the offputting female main character, which is surprisingly rare in contemporary fiction!
